Nexium 24-HR (esomeprazole) is used to treat an enlarged or weak stomach. It is also used to reduce the frequency of stomach ulcers. This medication works by decreasing the amount of stomach acid produced. It is taken orally once or twice a day. Taking the capsule before or after a meal may slow the action of the medication. Take the capsule at the same time daily. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule; crush the capsule whole; or crush and mix the capsule with a glass of water. It is important to take the capsule at the same time each day to get the most benefit from the medication. You should not take Nexium 24-HR more than once a day. If you miss a dose, take it when it is remembered. The dose may be increased or decreased based on the effectiveness of the medication. Take the dose as directed by your doctor. If the dose remains active in the body for more than 6 hours, stop the medication and inform your doctor or pharmacist of any side effects. This medicine can be taken with or without food.
